We've spent real time in all of them — and we live in one. Here's the honest comparison, with no incentive to point you anywhere in particular.
Every destination in Finnish Lapland is genuinely good. The question is which one suits your specific situation — where you're flying from, what you want to do, who you're travelling with. Here's the one-line honest answer for each.
Levi is the most practical Lapland destination for most European travellers. Direct flights land at Kittilä Airport — 15 minutes from the resort by free bus. No hire car needed. Finland's largest ski resort, voted best in the country multiple times. 590,000 skier days in 2024–25 — an all-time record.
Rovaniemi is right on the Arctic Circle and has more direct flight connections than any other Lapland destination — 38 international airports in winter 2025–26. Best for first-timers, families wanting the Santa experience, and travellers from airports without direct Levi routes. Hire car recommended to get the most from it.
260km above the Arctic Circle — the furthest north of all four destinations. The best northern lights odds in Finnish Lapland, genuine wilderness, and access to the Sámi cultural heartland at Inari. Less commercial than Levi or Rovaniemi. For people who mean it. Fly into Ivalo (IVL), 30 minutes north.
Ylläs is Levi's underrated neighbour — same Kittilä Airport, same direct European flights, but quieter, more local and with better cross-country skiing. Finland's highest fell at 718m, 63 ski runs, 330km of cross-country trails. For travellers who want what Levi offers in atmosphere, but without the resort crowd.
